What is Semen Made Of?
Have you ever wondered what your ejaculate is really made of? Just what is that “stuff”. Semen is secreted by the male sexual glands and is composed primarily of seminal plasma. This fluid is created by the seminal vesicles and the prostate gland. The bulbourethral organ glands also create some of the mucus contained in your ejaculate, this mucus is what gives semen its texture.
The purpose of this semen is a simply one. To safely carry and project the sperm on their way to the ova within the female reproductive tract. Without this protection sperm would simply not make it due to the acidic environment of the vagina.
The mucus and texturizing proteins serve to increase the mobility of sperm cells within the vagina and cervix which creates a less viscous channel for the sperm to travel through, while keeping them safely within the semen.
